OSPF Hello Packet

In this lesson, I am going to explain the role and significance of Hello Packets in OSPF. Understanding Hello Packets is essential because they form the foundation of how OSPF establishes and maintains neighbor relationships between routers. This process is crucial to ensuring that OSPF runs effectively and efficiently within a network.

So, what exactly are Hello Packets in OSPF? When OSPF is configured on two routers that have IP reachability between them, and the OSPF process is enabled on each router, the initial communication step involves the exchange of Hello Packets. These packets are the first messages sent between routers before any adjacency is formed.

Imagine Router 1 and Router 2, both configured with OSPF and connected through an IP network. As soon as OSPF is enabled, Router 1 sends a Hello Packet to Router 2, and Router 2 reciprocates by sending a Hello Packet back to Router 1.

But what’s inside these Hello Packets, and why are they important? The Hello Packets contain specific information that helps routers determine if they can form an OSPF neighbor relationship. For an OSPF adjacency to be established, certain criteria within the Hello Packets must match between the two routers. If these criteria do not align, the OSPF neighborship will not be formed, and the routers will not proceed to exchange routing information. This is why understanding Hello Packets and their content is crucial for anyone working with OSPF.

Router ID: This is a unique identifier for each router in the OSPF domain. The Router ID helps distinguish one router from another during the neighbor discovery and adjacency process.

Hello Interval: This is the time interval, in seconds, at which a router sends Hello Packets to its neighbors. By default, on MikroTik routers, the Hello Interval is set to 10 seconds. Both routers must have the same Hello Interval configured for the OSPF adjacency to be established.
