OSPF LSA Types Full Story

In this lesson, I have to speak about the different types of LSAs. Remember when we started this course, we said that they exchange LSAs with each other to build up the link-state database and so forth. Now, there are different types of LSAs that we have to know about.

Type 1: Router LSA

The first type of LSA is called LSA Type 1 or Router LSA.

  • How It Works: Each router will say, “This is my interface, and on this interface, I’m connected to that network.” These LSAs include a list of connected links on each router so that peer routers can know about the networks of the other peers.
  • Key Point: Type 1 LSAs stay inside the same area. This means they cannot go from one area to another in a multi-area OSPF setup.

Type 2: Network LSA

The second type that we have is called Type 2, or Network LSAs.

  • When You See It: This type of LSA is only seen when you have a Designated Router (DR). Once you have a scenario like this one, where there’s a DR, the DR sends this type of LSA.
  • What It Includes: The LSA will have all the routers connected to the multi-access network, specify the DR, and indicate the prefix of the network.
  • Example: This LSA will say that there are Router1, Router2, and Router3 in the network. It will also specify that Router3 is the DR and that the prefix is 192.168.123.0/24.
