OSPF Stub Areas Lab

This lab demonstrates how to configure and verify OSPF stub area types on MikroTik RouterOS v7. Below is the topology we’ll use for the configuration:

OSPF Network Scenario:

Lab Overview

We will configure the following OSPF stub area types:

  1. Stub Area: Restrict Type 5 LSAs (external routes).
  2. Totally Stubby Area: Restrict both Type 3 (inter-area) and Type 5 LSAs.
  3. Not-So-Stubby Area (NSSA): Restrict Type 5 LSAs while allowing ASBRs.
  4. Totally NSSA: Restrict both Type 3 and Type 5 LSAs, but permit ASBRs.

1. Configuring Area 1 as a Stub Area

In a Stub Area:

  • Type 5 LSAs (External LSAs) are not allowed.
  • Type 3 LSAs (Summary LSAs) remain visible.
  • ASBRs are not allowed in the area.

Configuration on Router R2:

[admin@R2] > /routing ospf area set [find where name="area1"] type=stub
[admin@R2] > /routing ospf area print
Flags: D - dynamic
Columns: NAME, TYPE, ID
# NAME TYPE ID
0 area1 stub 0.0.0.1
