Configuring multicast with IGMPv2 on MikroTik RouterOS

We are still on the same LAB scenario; I haven’t done any change. I need now to choose using IGMPv2 instead of IGMPv1. That’s something we only need to do on the MikroTik router as the following:

So the result will be as the following:

To be sure that IGMPv2 has been applied, you can go to IGMP Groups and check if the IGMP is version 2 as following:

Excellent!!!! Now believe it or not, IGMPv2 is running on our MikroTik router. I will open again the multicast traffic from the VLC server and see if the VLC client will receive the stream (I will not show the step again, it is same as I have done on the previous chapter when speaking about IGMPv1).

Indeed, the video is working. That’s great.

Now if I look to the IGMP Groups on the MikroTik router, I see the multicast address 239.1.2.3 and it has also the timer as the following:

I will close the VLC player at the receiver side and see whether the entry will remain in the IGMP Group table or will go right away.

You see the entry is not shown on the table anymore? Why is that? Because the host has reported to the MikroTik router that he doesn’t want the multicast anymore, and the router removed the entry that he should send the multicast streaming out from Ether2.

If we look to the interfaces on the router now, we see that Ether1 is still receiving the multicast from the VLC server, but it is not sent out from Ether2 (you can see that based on the difference of the speed on both interfaces)

That’s all about IGMPv2, see you in the upcoming chapter.
